Laiba wins KP World Day Female Squash title

Monday, October 07, 2013 - Peshawar—Laiba Ijaz clinched the trophy of the Khyber Pakhunkhwa Female Squash Tournament organized in connection with the World Squash Day Celebration by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Squash Association here at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex.

It was the fourth consecutive title of Laiba Ijaz she won earlier. Laiba bagged the trophy of the Khyber Pakhtunkwa Inter-Region, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inter-District, Independence Day Squash and now the title Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Women Squash Tournament held in connection with the World Squash Day celebration. Besides the Women event, events of Boys Under-11 and Under-13 were also organized by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Squash Association.

Laiba Ijaz took the first set by 11-9 and failed to click in the second set won by Noorjat Munir at 7-11. When the two players were tied 1-1, Laiba speeded up her shorts with some long rallies and succeeded in putting Noorjat Munir in the back of the court. Laiba got the third set by 11-6.

Talking to APP, Laiba, who also celebrated her birth day with her female players, said that October 5 is the day people around the World is celebrating World Squash Day.

The Day is very important for me because on the same day I also celebrate my birthday. “The title is a gift of God for me and I will try my best to achieve good name for PAF Squash Academy and for Pakistan,” Laiba added.

Zeeshan Zeb got the trophy of the Boys Under-13 event after defeating his strong rival Zeeshan Malik in the best three sets 2-1, the score was 10-12, 11-9 and 11-7.


The match also provided great thrill for the sitting jam-packed court. Both Zeeshan Zeb and Zeeshan Malik exhibited excellent squash and besides attacking display the spectators also enjoyed forceful smashes, drop shorts and long rallies.

Zeeshan Zeb faced tough resistance against Zeeshan Malik who won the first set by 10-12 but staged a strong comeback by winning two consecutive sets 11-9 and 11-7 to seal the fate of his rival Zeeshan Malik to 2-1.

In the boys Under-11 final tiny Noor Zaman, a top seeded player, was upset by little order from him in the marathon 3 sets battle. Noor Zaman took the first set by 7-11 but he failed against his rival Hamza Sharif who won two consecutive sets at 11-8 and 11-9.

At the end, the chief guest Base Commander Peshawar Air Commodore Waseem Hussain, gave away trophies and cash prizes to the position holders. Former World Champion Qamar Zaman, President of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Association, squash wizard Jansher Khan coach Mehboob Khan, players and spectators were also present.

In his brief chat, Waseem Hussain lauded holding of squash tournament on World Squash Day.

He said the facilities of PAF is always available to the players of squash free of cost and advised the players to continue their hard work so that Pakistan could be able to achieve its lost glory.
