World Space Week begins at UET Peshawar

The World Space Week, 2013 started at the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar in joint collaboration with Suparco, here on Friday. Zubair Qureshi, Executive Director Urban Policy Unit (UPU), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa addressed the audiences as a chief guest. He focused on the importance of gaining unexplored knowledge of space and upper atmosphere and to develop understanding to use the space technology on academic as well as practical fields. "As I am leading Urban Policy Unit, I can see this technology can be used in Geographic information system (GIS) and collecting information for improved city planning, we need to pick and choose ideas to bring improvements in our daily lives and respective fields," he said. He appreciated the efforts of UET, Peshawar in organising this international event for the last four years with Suparco successfully. Dean Faculty of Engineering, Professor Dr Zahid Mehmood while addressing the audiences said UET, Peshawar was interested to foster more linkages in research and development with Suparco as there are established centres of excellence and more than 80 PhD's in specialised engineering fields who could work with Suparco in joint programmes. Khalid Shiekh, Director General, System Controls, Suparco briefed the audiences about World Space Week and Suparco activities. He said World Space Week was an international celebration of space sciences and technology and their contribution for the betterment of human condition.
