Fighting crime: Anti-kidnapping cell to be formed soon, says IGP

PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Nasir Khan Durrani on Wednesday ordered the formation of an anti-kidnapping cell in the province that would operate directly under him.

Headed by DSP Tariq Habib, the cell would also be responsible for investigating cyber crimes. “It has been decided the anti-kidnapping cell would be equipped accordingly with GSM and GPS tracking facility,” said Durrani.

He added the cell would remain in touch with the political administration of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) where most of the kidnapped people are reportedly transferred and kept.

Kidnappings of local traders for ransom are becoming increasingly common in the province. On October 7, suspected militants kidnapped at least 10 people from Mattani, Peshawar. Police found their vehicles abandoned by the roadside the next morning.
