India’s ‘Toilet First Temple Later’ Dilemma

Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Ministerial Candidate ignited uproar last week after he stated that India needs to give priority to toilet formation rather than the temples. Mr. Modi, leader of strong opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stated these words while addressing to the party workers at the local airport of Mumbai, the country’s capital city. Opponents criticized his words contradictory to his staunch Hindu nationalistic politics.

‘Building toilets are important than building temples’ this is the statement of Modi. After the criticisms that stirred, he clarified it by saying that he is a staunch Hindu. His image goes opposite to what he stated. But he said so to what he feels, as reports one of the Indian website, economictimes, indiatimes.com.

The Congress Party leaders highly opposed his statement. Earlier when Jairam Ramesh, Rural Development Minister had given similar statement last April, the BJP officials heavily criticized him for stating that cleanliness and toilet constructions should be given priority. Similar statement by BJP Chairman met the same reaction.

There are several comprehensions of the Modi’s statements given by ordinary people and the known ones. Some see it to be for the benefit of the masses perspective while other views it to be a statement of a weak Hindu.

Some believe that he would lose votes from the staunch Hindu followers for giving priority to toilets over temples while others recognize him as a politician of welfare services.
