Sherpao calls for unity among Pakhtun nationalists After ANP and PTI, Hashim Babar joins QWP

PESHAWAR: Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) chief Aftab Sherpao on Sunday asked all the nationalist forces to join hands to address the problems being faced by the Pakhtuns.Speaking at a press conference here, he said there was a dire need to make efforts for the restoration of peace on the soil of the Pakhtuns.

Retired bureaucrat Hashim Babar, who was earlier associated with the Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced joining the QWP along with scores of his supporters. QWP provincial head and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senior Minister Sikandar Sherpao was present.

Aftab Sherpao said the Pakhtuns were faced with a host of problems due to the flawed policies of the previous government. He said that over 50,000 people were killed and hundreds of others injured in acts of subversion over the last several years. He asked the federal government to seek a viable solution to the problems being faced by the Pakhtuns and take steps to restore sustainable peace in the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The QWP leader said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa produced more gas and electricity than other provinces and it was time the federal government allowed the Pakhtuns to become masters of their resources. He added that the Pakhtuns were playing an important role in making Pakistan a developed country.

About the recent hike in power and POL prices, the QWP leader said the federal government should withdraw the raise as the people were already grappling with skyrocketing inflation and putting more burden on them was unjust.

He said the US troops would start pulling out from Afghanistan next year so the federal government should come up with a mechanism to work out a strategy for the post-2014 scenario. He said the government should take steps to remove trust deficit between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Hashim Babar in his address reposed confidence in the leadership of Aftab Sherpao and vowed to work for strengthening the party and uniting the Pakhtuns. He said his decision to join the PTI was a political blunder as its head Imran Khan had no political vision. To a question, he said he didn’t quit the ANP but the party leadership had expelled him.
