How Easter is celebrated across Pakistan

A day before Easter, Sumaira Kafue set off for her hometown to celebrate the festive occasion with her family. But unlike hundreds of Christians who travel to their hometowns in Punjab, Sumaira instead heads off for rural Sindh. In Mirpurkhas, where the 22-year-old’s family and six other Christian families live, they all claim to be natives of the province and call themselves Sindhi Christians. “People are surprised when I tell them that I am a Sindhi Christian. Everyone has heard of Punjabi Christians but not of Sindhi Christians,” muses Sumaira.

The young woman, who works in a house in Karachi, says that her ancestors belong to Sindh and have lived there all their life. However, her father married a Punjabi Christian.

Local government election; a realistic approach

A tough assignment for the PTI led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is just to begin; the holding of local government election would be the test of credibility and the commitment of the present set up. It has been reiterated time and again by Imran Khan and his party stalwarts that the democratic practices should be observed at gross root level and the designation of powers to district, Tehsil and even the village level would help to end up the corruption and facilitate transparency from the bottom up to the top. It is mandatory for a democratic system of government to encourage local government set up so that the people should have the benefits at their door steps.

About 400 years after it was first introduced, Swara - the practice of forcefully marrying of girls, even minors, to resolve feuds between clans - continues in Pakistan's north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas.

Off late, a number of such incidents have come to light in the picturesque Swat valley, a stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban.

Swara is a child marriage custom in tribal areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It is tied to blood feuds among the different tribes and clans.

Dearth of capital hampered industrialisation in KP

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may have attained self-sufficiency in revenue generation due to the comparative advantage in some industrial sectors, but the dearth of capital hampered industrialisation in the province, a researcher said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the public defence of her PhD, Neelofar Asghar said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was poorest among the four federating units despite availability of hardworking labour force, capital and raw material.

The topic of Neelofar, a research scholar at the department of Political Science, was “Unequal Development in a Peripheral Capitalist State: A Case Study of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan (1947 - 1977).”

While Malala missed out last week on the Nobel Peace Prize, her plight is helping change attitudes in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, which lies at the center of a Taliban insurgency. The four-month-old provincial government boosted education spending by about 30 percent and began an enrollment drive that has added 200,000 children, including 75,000 girls.

He is a Class 5 student at the University Public School in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and the administrative centre for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to its west.Ali’s parents shifted him in 2010 from their village Pranghar in FATA’s Mohmand Agency to a school in Peshawar, 157 km away. The Taliban militants have since 2005 systematically destroyed 120 schools in this Pakistan district, one of the seven agencies that make up FATA on Afghanistan’s southeastern border.

Contours of politics in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Dominantly inhabited by the Pakhtuns and mainly rural, the nature of politics of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is very complex and complicated due to a number of reasons. The political trends of the province has been deeply influenced by the local, regional and international dynamics such as geographical location, issues of bad governance, the emergence of militant Islamists under an international agenda and the Afghan civil war in 1990's.

Pakistan: Legitimizing Terror In Peshawar – Analysis

Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, has been brought under a relentless campaign of violence and intimidation by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its affiliates. TTP terrorists have continued principally to attack unarmed civilians across the District, though some attacks have also targeted the Security Forces (SFs).

On September 29, 2013, a car bomb killed at least 42 people and injured another 100 in Kissa Khawani Bazaar (the storytellers’ market) of Peshawar. A splinter group of the TTP [unspecified] claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying the attack was in response to United States (US) drone strikes in tribal areas. However, TTP ‘spokesman’ Shahidullah Shahid condemned the attack saying, “We are targeting the Government machinery and the law enforcement agencies but not general public.”

In another targeted attack on September 27, 2013, the terrorists killed at least 19 persons and injured another 42 in a bomb explosion on a bus carrying employees of the Civil Secretariat at the Gulbela area on Charsadda Road in Peshawar. “This time, the targets of the attack were Government employees”, the Commissioner of Peshawar, Sahibzada Mohammad Anis, confirmed.
