Three candidates in run for Supreme Court Bar Association’s top slot

ISLAMABAD: There are three candidates in the run for the top slot of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBA) in the upcoming election.

The candidates are Amanullah Kanrani, Kamran Murtaza and Rab Nawaz Raja. A tough competition is expected between Kanrani and Kamran. According to the sources, Muhammad Sadiq Hidayatullah from Sindh and Syed Sardar Hussain from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been appointed vice presidents of the SCBA. Raja Muqsit Nawaz Khan and Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan have been appointed to the office of the additional secretary and secretary finance, respectively. These officials have been appointed unopposed.

Three candidates are in the run for the office of SCBA secretary – Asif Mehmood Cheema, Azmatullah Chaudhry and Muhammad Aslam Pervez Mian. Over 2,200 members of the Supreme Court Bar Association also have to elect members of executive committees of all the four provinces. This time 10 candidates are vying for the executive committee of Punjab, four each from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while five from Balochistan.

According to the rules of the SCBA, two candidates each would be elected from the four provinces, while six would come on merit. Prior to the elections, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) would be held in Lahore on October 26. The incumbent SCBA president, Mian Israrul Haq, would chair the annual gathering which would be attended by all the members of the bar association. During the meeting, SCBA Secretary Raja Javed Iqbal would present the annual general performance report of the bar, while Finance Secretary Qari Abdul Rasheed would give details of the Budget Annual Report. Additional Secretary Sardar Abdul Majeed Khan would brief the meeting about the construction of lawyers’ hostel and complex.
